David Lidbetter
David Lidbetter is a well-known Canadian landscape painter who has been developing his skills on a professional level for more than 20 years. After exploring various media and subject matter, Lidbetter found his niche painting predominantly winter scenes of highly identifiable and unquestionably Canadian landscapes. Those paintings are often of scenes close to his studio: the hills of Quebec, Algonquin Park, and Northern Canada. He works primarily in oil on board and canvas and most recently has introduced watercolor for works on paper.
The artist frequently finds himself spending hours and sometimes days in local forests and nearby lakes photographing, studying, sketching, and absorbing the information he will later turn into larger paintings. “The scenes that capture me are often the ones that would immediately be overlooked by others,” he says. “Something usually catches my eye, such as a change of light or a strong contrast of color and shapes.”
Lidbetter’s work has been described as “contemporary Group of Seven scenes pared down to their essentials. [Where] mood seems more important than the actual details of forests, rivers, and skies.” His work is considered highly collectible and is in numerous private and corporate collections in Canada, the States, and internationally.
Lidbetter is represented by Wall Space Gallery (Ottawa, Ontario), Muse Gallery (Toronto, Ontario), Algonquin Art Centre (Huntsville, Ontario), The Prow Gallery (Halifax, Nova Scotia), and Howard/Mandville Gallery (Woodinville, WA).
