Dennis Sheehan
Dennis Sheehan is a painter known for his work executed in the style of the great masters of the Barbizon School and the American Tonalists. Born in Boston and currently residing in New Hampshire, Sheehan received his artistic training at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and the Montserrat School of Visual Art, in Beverly, MA. He also studied with two of R.H. Ives Gammell’s former students, Robert Cormier and Richard Whitney, and painted with the Putney Painters under Richard Schmid for 14 years.
“The main objective of my current approach is, through landscape, to express feelings and sentiments that reach deep within the heart and soul of the human experience,” Sheehan says. To obtain this goal, the artist employs a dark palette and the thickly pigmented surfaces of the French Barbizon School, eschewing picturesque scenery in the interest of evoking atmosphere. Much like the great 19th-century artist George Inness, Sheehan produces his paintings in the studio from his imagination. These pastoral paintings evoke the moody beauty and deep peace of nature, with the goal of creating images that emanate light.
Sheehan’s paintings are in major public and private collections, including the White House, and have been featured in numerous art publications. He has had solo exhibitions at the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA, and at The Guild of Boston Artists, where he is a member. He has taught at St. John’s Prep School in Danvers, MA, and currently teaches in his studio in Manchester, NH and at the Village Arts of Putney. His paintings can be found on exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, The Guild of Boston Artists, and other prestigious galleries across the world. In 2023 he will have a solo exhibition at the St. Botolph Club in Boston.
Sheehan is represented by Susan Powell Fine Art (Madison, CT).
