Justin T. Worrell
Justin T. Worrell is a Virginia-based tonalist landscape artist. As an oil painter, Worrell applies paint thinly and uses a drybrush technique to create dreamlike, atmospheric, and emotionally charged images. The artist refers to this approach as a compromise between the temporal and eternal.
“I work this effect through atmospheric, moody, and sublime images that are typically derived from my imagination,” he describes. “While working toward a picture’s resolution, I conjure amorphous and semi-abstract forms constituted by intense light. It is this light that acts as a causeway between the temporal and the eternal spirit.”
Worrell’s interest in art began early in life. He fondly recalls sitting beside his grandmother, who was a painter, in her home studio asking questions and observing the craft firsthand. Worrell painted primarily as a hobby at first, when time allowed. Then in 2014, he began more formal oil-painting training by attending classes instructed by Mike Francis at The Art League, in Alexandria, Virginia. He also participated in many workshops with artists he admired, such as Dennis Sheehan.
Worrell’s work is collected nationally and internationally. He is a Signature Member of the American Tonalist Society, an Exhibiting Member of The Art League, and a Member of the Oil Painters of America. He is represented by Principle Gallery (Alexandria, VA and Charleston, SC).
