Kevin Courter

Kevin Courter was born in Palo Alto, California. Growing up in the Golden State, he developed a lifelong appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the California landscape. Whether capturing rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain ranges, the vast wetlands in the Sacramento Valley, or the majesty of the coastline, Courter is, first and foremost, a California painter. In more recent years he has also come to appreciate the varied landscapes found in Utah and Montana, the later of which he visited for the first time in the fall of 2013. The artist immediately fell in love with the unique beauty found in Montana’s fertile valleys, specifically the Bitterroot Valley and Paradise Valley, as well as Livingston and Bozeman.

Courter’s paintings of California and Montana reflect the awesome and awe-inspiring beauty that can be found in God’s creation. Whether painted in the studio or on location, the artist’s work reveals his passion for the land he loves. “It’s in nature’s simple and intimate vignettes that I find the most beauty,” he shares, “such as the elegant stature of eucalyptus in the setting sun.”

A member of the Oil Painters of America and a Signature Member of the American Tonalist Society, Courter is inspired by the moody and ethereal work of contemporaries Russell Chatham (1939-2019) and André Balyon (1951-) and such painters of the past as Arthur F. Matthews (1860-1945), Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966), and George Inness (1825-1894). Courter’s paintings can be found in prominent private and museum collections around the world, and he has shown his work and won awards in numerous exhibitions, events, and festivals across the country.

Courter and his wife, Janice, moved to Redding, California in 2019, which has presented the artist with some new and exciting opportunities. He is represented by Mockingbird Gallery (Bend, OR), Horizon Fine Art Gallery (Jackson Hole, WY), and Sekula’s Art, Antiques & Design (Sacramento, CA).
