Shawn Krueger
Shawn Krueger received a B.F.A. from Calvin College in 1998, studying under Chris Stoffel Overvoorde. Upon graduation, he traveled frequently to the UK and painted in nearly every corner of Great Britain. Over the course of his career, Krueger has shown his landscape paintings with a variety of galleries across the United States. His work is in dozens of private collections and has been acquired for the permanent collections of the Michigan House of Representatives, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Calvin College, and the Bissell Corporation.
Although Krueger lives and keeps a home studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan, his most recent focus has been the mountains of Western North Carolina, the Lake Huron shoreline, and just about any wooded area. “The past however many years of pandemic and uncertainty have only deepened a desire to find relevance, and as a result my search for peace, place, and quiet beauty has grown in importance,” the artist shares. “The times we are living in practically demand that search. I don’t think we have a choice, because it is seemingly never quiet anymore. We are constantly knocked back by the noise. We are misunderstood, hated, or, worse yet, ignored. And yet somehow, if not by miracle then by stubborn resolve, our desire to depict beauty does not diminish.”
As a Signature Member of the American Tonalist Society, as well as a Roycroft Master Artisan, Krueger often finds himself seeking areas of commonality, both contemporary and historical, where Tonalism and the Arts & Crafts movements co-exist. He is represented by Abend Gallery (Denver, CO), Grovewood Gallery (Asheville, NC), Roycroft Artisans’ Schoolhouse Gallery (East Aurora, NY), and CircaArts Gallery (South Bend, IN).
